Santa Rosa FL Botox | The Many Uses of Botox

When most people think of Botox, they think of cosmetics and treating fine lines and wrinkles on the face. While Botox has made quite a name for itself in the cosmetic industry, it was originally used for medical purposes. A resurgence of these uses has increased interest in using Botox for uses other than strictly cosmetic. Some patients who have exhausted other options for treatment for certain disorders find Botox to be a viable form of treatment for them. Learn about the many uses of Botox and how it can benefit you.

What is Botox?

Botox or Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and other related species. Through injections in small doses, it prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at neuromuscular junctions and causes temporary flaccid paralysis. Botox comes in two forms (A and B) that are used for different treatments.

What Other Uses Does Botox Have?

While the cosmetic side of Botox is what many of us may first consider, the drug also has real world medical applications that help people lead happier and more comfortable lives. Some other uses for Botox include the treatment of:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Overactive bladder
  • Crossed-eyes

Botox has been used in some cases to help with the symptoms of depression as well. With routinely conducted procedures, patients can see a prolonged effect on all of the previous conditions as a result of Botox injections.

Hopefully the next time you think about Botox, you’ll consider the large numbers of individuals these treatments have been able to help. If you want to experience some of the beneficial effects Botox can have on your own physical appearance, contact our office and schedule an appointment today. We can go over what your goals are and how we can best achieve them. We look forward to hearing from you and speaking soon.

Santa Rosa FL Botox | Your Botox Questions Answered

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Botox. On one side are those who are cautious and maybe even a little confused. On the other, are millions of people who swear by the treatment. Is it right for you? We’ll explain everything you need to know and let you decide for yourself.

What does Botox do?

The highly purified toxin temporarily erases or reduces frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines, among a long laundry list of other uses.

Will Botox make me look frozen or cartoonish?

When administered correctly, Botox has amazing effects, restoring youth to your facial features. It’s only when too much is injected in the wrong spots that the frozen look appears. As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to be treated by an experienced professional. Luckily, we are.

Does Botox have side effects?

The possible side effects are extremely limited and short-lived. 1-5% of cases can have mild droopiness in the eyelids, which usually goes away within a few weeks. Some patients experience slight bruising.

Does Botox hurt?

Botox is no more or less painful than other similar injections. Some professionals offer topical anesthesia or use ice to numb the area for your comfort.

How long does Botox Last?

Results will vary from patient to patient, but you can typically expect a range of three and a half to four months.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Santa Rosa Beach FL Botox Treatment | What Is Preventative Botox?

Most of us are reasonably familiar with Botox. They’re injections people receive to reduce wrinkles, creases, frown lines, and furrows that materialize on our faces and necks as we age. The underlying science is actually fairly straightforward. Botox’s mechanism of action–a highly potent substance called botulinum toxin— helps clients look younger and revitalized.

As one might expect from a medical treatment that can literally reverse or at least significantly slow signs of aging, Botox is incredibly popular. Last year over seven million people received at least one injection. But what might surprise people is that it’s not just women in middle age and beyond that are getting Botox. In recent years, the number of young women and men in their twenties and thirties opting for the treatment has gradually risen. But they’re not receiving injections for the same reasons as their counterparts in their fifties and sixties—at least not exactly. These younger people are taking advantage of something called preventative Botox.

So What Is Preventative Botox?

Individuals in their late twenties and thirties don’t need to get Botox for traditional reasons. After all, they don’t have the forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other facial wrinkles that older men and women want to soften or eliminate. Preventative Botox isn’t solely focused on getting rid of the few wrinkles that younger adults do have. Instead, the purpose of preventative Botox is to stop wrinkles from forming at all.

Twenty- and thirty-somethings can get preventative Botox injections to stop the progression of fine lines while they’re still in their earliest stages. In other cases, they can simply freeze those facial muscles up before they start forming any wrinkles at all.

Who Should Consider It?

If you’re in your late twenties or early thirties and are beginning to see even the subtlest signs of fine lines and facial wrinkles, preventative Botox could be an ideal fit for you. By getting a preventative Botox injection, you’ll eliminate the few wrinkles you already have right now. Perhaps more importantly, you’ll be stopping any further progression of them in the future.

Preventative Botox is also a viable option for anyone who doesn’t have any wrinkles but wants to be aggressive and forward-thinking about the effects of aging. You can prevent major fine lines from forming on your face and neck now, instead of waiting until later in life. It’s a matter of personal choice, certainly, but there’s a logic to the idea of preventing certain wrinkles from forming at all.

If you want to see if this treatment could be right for you, make an appointment with our office today and maintain your natural beauty for a lifetime.

Facial Fillers Near Me | Botox & Facial Fillers: The Subtle Differences

It’s likely that you’re familiar with Botox. The brand name for a powerful neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin, it leaves patients with fewer fine lines, creases, and crow’s feet. Botox is a wildly popular cosmetic treatment, with over seven million individuals a year receiving it. However, it’s not the only age-defying injectable out there. Facial fillers are often confused with Botox, but the two treatments have some important differences. Let’s take a side-by-side look at Botox and facial fillers.

Botox uses trace amounts of a potent neurotoxin to prevent neck and facial muscles from making the visible contractions that appear with age. The drug primarily works on “lines of expression”—the wrinkles and fine lines that appear when we’re smiling, frowning, or scrunching our faces in focus. The effects of Botox and the other two FDA-approved botulinum neurotoxins available in the U.S., Dysport and Xeomin, typically last between three and six months. The minimal side effects from these drugs include swelling, bruising, and occasional skin darkening at the injection site. They should last no more than a few days.

Facial Fillers

While they are administered on similar parts of the face, facial fillers utilize different elements than Botox to achieve a distinct effect. Facial fillers are injections that typically use one of three substances: collagen, hyaluronic acid, or calcium hydroxyl. But these injections don’t paralyze facial muscles to disappear fine lines. Instead, they restore and rejuvenate the soft-tissue in our faces that deteriorates over time. Collagen, in particular, is in some ways the perfect drug to achieve this effect. That’s because it’s a protein found in mammals that supports connectivity in muscle and skin tissue and helps preserve skin elasticity.

Facial fillers aren’t exclusively concerned with zapping specific wrinkles, either. Their primary goal is to restore volume in the cheeks, lips, and nasolabial folds—parts of the face that tend to sink inward over time. In doing this, facial fillers can also help reduce or eliminate wrinkles in those areas. Facial injections last anywhere between nine and 18 months.

What’s Right for You?

Individuals deciding between Botox and facial injections should ask themselves what their top goals are with the procedure. Botox is ideal for certain types of wrinkles, including crow’s feet and furrow lines. But if you’re looking to restore lost volume and want something that helps your face look fuller and more youthful, facial injections might be a better fit. Santa Rosa Beach FL Botox Treatment | Motion Creates Emotion: How Botox Might Treat Anxiety and Depression

Santa Rosa Beach FL Botox Treatment | Motion Creates Emotion: How Botox Might Treat Anxiety and Depression

There is something known in science as the ‘facial feedback hypothesis’. First conceived by Charles Darwin, it suggests that something as simple as our facial expressions can impact the way we feel. For example, there’s an idea that if you made yourself smile, your brain would interpret that as something associated with being happy, and therefore make you feel happier. Try it for yourself right now. Did you notice even a subtle change?

While interesting in and of itself, this idea may not seem to have much to do with Botox and cosmetic surgery. But recently, some leading experts are starting to suggest that Botox could have a similar impact on your mood.

We all know how Botox can help restore your physical appearance by softening wrinkles. The confidence you gain from this could be enough to make most of us feel better about ourselves, and maybe even happier. When you stop worrying about your appearance and feel more confident in your own skin, it naturally translates into an overall better mood. We like to feel beautiful and confident. Botox helps us achieve this.

The Journal of Psychiatric Research has published several studies which conclude that botox is a viable way to treat depression. Perceived physical improvement can cause changes in neurology, meaning that Botox treatments make people feel better. According to one study, over half of depressed subjects had major mood improvements after using Botox to smooth wrinkles and relax their facial muscles.

Regardless of your feelings about Botox, it’s clear that your face can play a huge part in dictating your mindset. As always, it’s best to consult with your doctor before beginning any treatment. Schedule your next appointment with our office today to discuss all the potential benefits of Botox treatments.

Santa Rosa Beach FL Botox | The Undeserved Bad Reputation of Botox

Botox. Even the word itself can bring images of caricature faced celebrities to mind. “They’ve had some work done,” you scoff. But if this bad reputation is keeping you from trying Botox for yourself, it shouldn’t be. While Botox comes with its fair share of potential side effects, the majority of these are significantly worsened by the unqualified nature of your provider. So how can you make sure that your doctor has the skills and experience necessary to work on you?

Spotting Red Flags

When trying to choose the right doctor it’s all about priorities. You should be looking for skill, experience, and credentials. This is not the time to bargain shop. Stick to someone with the proper training, credentials and skill that you know you can trust. There’s more artistic talent required in creating a natural look with Botox than most may have considered. Make sure your doctor has both the scientific understanding as well as the artistic vision to ensure you achieve naturally beautiful results.

Additionally, both you and your doctor should have reasonable expectations. Botox isn’t for everyone, and the right doctor may try to dissuade you if there is a better treatment available. When it comes to this treatment, less is more and your doctor should be there to help you manage your expectations about what Botox can achieve. It’s important to remember that Botox is used to relax and smooth lines, not completely erase.

Next on our list of red flags are the “super sales” of Botox. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. A heavy discount could very well be a sign that the office doesn’t perform the procedure very often and is trying to move its expiring product off the shelves. That means a lack of experience and a low quality product.

If the stress of your appearance is causing your wrinkles to deepen faster, don’t let the bad reputation of Botox convince you there are no solutions. Contact our office today and see if Botox could be the treatment you’ve been needing.

Facial Peel 32459 | Four Surprising Uses for Botox Injections

Facial Peel 32459

In its traditional use, most people know of Botox as a treatment used to reduce wrinkles in an effort to make patients look younger. What many don’t know is that Botox has a whole list of other beneficial uses too, some of which may just surprise you.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be extremely uncomfortable for patients both physically and mentally. Often, patients don’t realize that there could be a solution. Even fewer know that Botox could be one possible option. If prescription antiperspirants or oral medications don’t work, Botox injections could significantly reduce the amount of sweat you produce. While injections under the arms could be what first come to mind, other areas are able to be treated as well. Your palms, soles, and scalp can all be helped with Botox. Results from this form of treatment usually last anywhere from four to six months.

Those of us who have experienced migraines in the past understand how debilitating they can be. Mayo Clinic has used Botox since 2002 as a way to safely and effectively reduce migraines in patients with severe cases. Results can last as long as 3 months, but vary per person. It is worth noting that the points of injection are similar to the ones used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.

It seems like every day another breakthrough acne solution sponsored by a celebrity is offered to acne-sufferers. Possibly soon to be added to the growing list is Botox. Several studies have shown that when injected into active acne lesions, Botox can decrease oil production and lead to less acne.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) can also be treated through the magic of Botox. Used to help relax the jaw and facial muscles, Botox can help ease jaw pain that results from grinding and clenching.

If you have any questions on whether Botox may be right for you, don’t hesitate to contact our office. We look forward to speaking with you!

Botox is for Men, Too!

The stigma in facial esthetics is that it’s a female-only market.  The reality is there are many men that would (and do) benefit from these services, too.

Breaking the Mold

It’s time to break the mold and the stigma that surrounds the ‘ladies only’ mentality for facial esthetics.  Men can be just as self-conscious about their looks as women.  From reducing the appearance of a furrow in the brow, to plumping thin lips and reducing crow’s feet, men want to get a more youthful look–which is why more than 400,000 men received treatments in 2014 and that number has continued to grow.

Health Reasons

Botox and other dermal fillers aren’t just for looks.  Many men and women use Botox to help manage their headaches or muscle spasms.  Botox can even be used for treating hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating.

Aging and the Marketplace

Today’s job market is as competitive as ever, which means applicants are doing everything possible to look desirable to potential employers.  These efforts go beyond resume writing to include dressing for the role and trying to make themselves physically look younger.  One thing that men and women alike are concerned about is their face showing their age.  Dermal fillers work wonders in helping hold back the hands of time and erasing the wrinkles left by life’s stressors.

If you’re a man (or know of one) who is looking for Botox, dermal fillers, or other facial esthetic procedures, feel free to contact our office.  All appointments with Dr. Amber Wiebe are completely confidential.  No one has to know your secrets for looking younger (unless you choose to tell them).

Botox in Destin | Tips to Make Your Botox & Dermal Fillers Last Longer

32459 Botox

You’ve invested in your skin by getting Botox and/or dermal fillers.  Now you want to make sure you get the maximum effects and optimize results.  Here are some tips to help your results last:

Sun Protection[1]

Overexposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds can actually reverse the benefits of your treatments.  This is why Dr. Amber Wiebe encourages all patients to use sun protection, especially following these injectables.  At Destin Botox, we recommend our patients use a high quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen.  Do your best to avoid being outdoors during peak UV hours, and wear a wide-brimmed hat for added precaution.

While exercise is extremely beneficial to the body in a number of ways, avid gym-goers may experience somewhat shorter result timelines.  What’s best is not to cancel the gym membership, but to be conscientious and make efforts to avoid squinting or scowling during exercise routines and throughout the day.  An easy modification is to wear a hat and sunglasses when outside to reduce your urge to squint.

Eat Right

It’s no secret that the foods we eat can affect our skin (ask any teenager).  Following dermal fillers, it’s best to avoid processed and packaged foods, and limit your sugar intake.  These foods can cause inflammation which impacts your overall skin health.

Reduce Stress

Easier said than done, as stress is simply a part of daily life.  But high levels of stress can release cortisol and other hormones that actually accelerate the aging process, and can quickly translate into unwanted signs of aging manifesting themselves in your skin.

Try to reduce unnecessary stressors, and incorporate stress relief techniques into your day.  Enjoy a candle-lit bubble bath, sit on your deck and read a book after dinner, or enjoy quiet meditation and yoga.

Increase Zinc

Some studies have shown that the effects of Botox are linked to zinc levels in the blood.  And, many people tend to have a slight zinc deficiency anyway.  Taking a zinc supplement following your Botox or dermal filler treatment may help extend the anti-aging results.

Hands-down, the best way to extend the results of your Botox or dermal filler results is to continue with regular ‘maintenance’ treatments before the results wear off.  By undergoing regular treatments of Botox, the targeted muscles may actually become trained to better respond to the neurotoxin, offering extended results.

If you’re ready for your next Botox maintenance treatment, or are interested in one of our many facial esthetics services, please contact our office.  Dr. Amber Wiebe at Destin Botox is happily accepting new patients.
