The skin is not only the largest organ in the human body, but is also unique in many ways. It is the first line of defense we have against foreign invaders and disease-causing pathogens. As an effective barrier, it contains glands, oil, proteins, and other biological compounds that maintain the firmness, elasticity, hydration, smoothness, volume, and structure of the skin.

While the skin has five layers, each layer has a specific role to play in maintaining skin health. The uppermost layer, called the epidermis, contains dead skin cells that are periodically shed, while the middle layer – the dermis – contains skin health proteins called collagen and elastin. Collagen provides structural support while also promoting new cell growth and tissue repair. It is released in response to external injury to accelerate cell regeneration and wound healing.

Low collagen levels can be a result of the natural aging process as well as external pollutants, chronic illnesses, smoking, exposure to ultraviolet rays, and certain medications. Lack of collagen leads to unwelcome side effects of aging or premature aging with fine lines, folds, wrinkles, creases, and under-eye bags.

Microneedling with the SkinPen™ device produces micro-injuries that encourage collagen production. Although superficial, these injuries initiate a cascade of wound healing, stimulating the release of collagen, which in turn, restores the skin’s suppleness, strength, and structure.

During this procedure, Dr. Wiebe uses the SkinPen™, which has tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the facial skin in a precise, controlled way. The SkinPen™ produces superficial micro-channels on the skin that facilitate a more effective absorption of topical serums into the skin.

First, a topical numbing cream is applied to maximize comfort. Then, Dr. Wiebe uses the SkinPen™ device that has a secured tip with tiny micro-needles.

A topical gel is applied while Dr. Wiebe selects the precise treatment depth based on her evaluation of the extent of wrinkles or fine lines and your unique cosmetic needs. The pen is gently moved over the skin to create controlled and precise micro-injuries that promote collagen generation.

The entire procedure can be completed within 15 to 30 minutes, although the exact time taken depends on the area being treated and the extent of treatment required.
